MISFIT ASSASSINS takes place in America, about three hundred
years in the future. Between now and then ocurred a lot of political turmoil, slowly at first... but wars and fear made
it easier for extremists to dominate politics. Soon, the country was so polarized that checks and balances literally
made it impossible to pass even the simplest of bills.
The Constitution was changed to make legislature more expedient,
and in 2195, the States changed the executive branch to contain, rather than one elected president, two Party-chosen representatives.
These representatives do not have names, and are referred to as Sir Peace and Sir Love.
The parties formerly known as Republican and Democrat slowly
changed to the Party of Love and the Party of Peace. This happened through advertisements and campaigns, and after some
time, the old names were dropped, obsolete. Kind of like Kentucky Fried Chicken being called KFC.
There were many cold wars in those 300 years, and Cold
World War was ended by a treatise banning all technological advancements. Zealots proclaimed that the only way to find
peace was to destroy all existing technology.
This is where Zombie comes in. Because he can't die, he was revered
as a sort of idol, and also used in propaganda to make America seem even more powerful and undefeatable- he was billed as
the Savior Machine, although most of his job back then involved boosting the public morale by making very patriotic movies
and being a rock star. He was more of a symbol than anything else. However, when the technological "cleansing" bill was passed,
the neighboring countries considered Zombie a weapon and banned him too. (I'll try not to say any more, although... more stuff
definitely happened.)
After a few years, however, the ban on tech advancements
was withdrawn and society once again began to crawl forward. Still, technology was frowned upon and the only real techie
things used by the assassins are different kinds of guns, phones (generally stationary phones, although they do have the obligatory
team walkie-talkies... and you'll notice some of the richer, politically elite characters have real cell-phones) and television.
No internet. NONE. @_@ wow.
Television channels are either Love or Peace-sponsored,
and generally shows are dubbed twice, one for each audience. Also, although public schools aren't technically segregated
between Parties, prep schools are. Usually different geological areas have more than 90% of citizens voting for the
same Party, meaning that naturally the Parties seem to segregate themselves.
Tom and Bertha both grew up in a very Party of Love area,
as did Erika. Eve somehow avoided politics; the circus she worked for barbed both Parties in its acts, depending on
the audiences, so she grew up suspicious of both Parties. King grew up entrenched in the Party of Peace. Leif grew up
in a Party of Peace area.
